AdhesivesNails and rivets are not the only thing users can use to keep two surfaces together. Adhesive fastening is increasing in popularity; not only due to weight and budget restrictions, but also because of the flexibility and modern finishes these solutions offer. If used correctly it might be viable to replace nails with adhesives, as industrial adhesives provide more strength and are often economical. A negative aspect of using adhesives is that once it is stuck, it is stuck. The materials you stick together cannot always handle the harsh chemicals needed to dissolve the adhesive, which means that you have to be precise when using this industrial type of glue. By using industrial adhesives, you can cancel out the use of extra tools and equipment you would usually need to attach different surfaces to one another. Types of AdhesivesAdhesives, commonly known as glue, come in various forms and magnitudes of strength. When purchasing adhesives, double check that it is the correct one for your project. This is influenced by the certain materials you are using, their respective surfaces and the environmental conditions they will be exposed to. There are four broad categories of adhesives, namely: non-reactive, reactive, natural and synthetic adhesives. Non-reactive adhesives take the form of a drying (dries when solvent evaporates), pressure sensitive (bonds when pressed tightly), contact (used for kitchen counter tops) and hot adhesives (glue guns utilising thermoplastics). Reactive adhesives utilise the process of a chemical reaction and form high magnitude bonds. These adhesives include multi-part (mixing to agents together that react and harden) and one-part adhesives (uses an external energy source such as heat or electricity to react). Natural adhesives, also known as bio-adhesives, are made from plant and animal matter which are commonly used in the binding of books. Synthetic adhesives use various forms of polyurethane and epoxies to form tight bonds. Need more information about the different types of adhesives?
