For the everyday handyman, here is a list of important hand tools necessary for every household or office which will enable you to do the basic maintenance and repairs.

A claw hammer is also known as a nail hammer or a carpenter’s hammer and is used to insert and remove nails and plugs. They are not expensive and can be found at any hardware store.

A hoe is wonderful for loosening the soil and roots of small herbaceous weeds in disturbed sites.

A lopper is a heavy duty secateur and is used to cut green material between 20 mm and 50 mm in diameter. It can also be used to cut tree roots on the ground.

A pipe cutter is the fastest way you’ll ever cut a PVC pipe. You can also use a hacksaw but it won’t cut as fast as a pipe cutter.

A rubber mallet is most often used in the Horticulture and Irrigation Industries to create new paving or brickworks, or to pull up paving when irrigation needs to be installed. This is a wonderful tool as it allows you to apply force without breaking the object.

This hand tool doesn’t need much explaining and is absolutely essential for any handyman or general repairs. It is used to drive and remove screws, come in a range of sizes and available from any hardware store.

This is a sealed glass tube filled with colourless liquid but has a small air bubble. So when the bubble is positioned between the two marks the spirit level is precisely horizontal and vertical.

This seal tape is fitted around pipe joins and fittings to create an airtight seal and prevent water leaks.
