How to Pick The Right GeneratorThere are many things to consider when picking a generator. One of the biggest things is power. There are many different power outputs for generators, and it is a wise idea to do a little researching first. 1000Watt generators and below are good in a pinch, like is you have an emergency power outage and just need a little bit of lighting. These are also ideal for many family camping trips, to light up a pop up trailer, or listen to the radio.
From 1,000-3,000Watts, these generators are great for larger applications, and can run several appliances at once. Televisions and DVD players, a microwave, things like that. You will find this size in many smaller motor homes, trailers, and fifth wheels. You still have to understand that there are still limitations, and you shouldn't try to run too many appliances at one time. For commercial and industrial application, you will want one over 3,000Watts, and there are many products available in larger sizes, up to large trailer mounted power plants. If you are an average working person that needs to run power tools, then one in the 5,000-8,000Watt range will work well for your business. The next consideration will be how long it will be running continuously. Many of your smaller generators also have small gas tanks, some under a gallon. Your mid range and larger models, come in a wide range of tank sizes, from 1 gallon all the way to 10 and more. If you are using one of the smaller sizes, chances are you aren't going to be running for more than a few hours, depending on load, so standard issue tanks are just fine. The next consideration is noise level. Generator noise level is measured in decibels, and the lower the decibel level the quieter it will be. If you are using generators for recreational activities, many parks and campgrounds have heavy restrictions concerning noise levels. If you want a really nice quiet generator, no matter what size you want, try a Honda. They specialize in the most whisper quiet generator manufactured in both commercial and personal applications. This brings us to brands of generators available. If you want top name brands, then Honda, Onan, and Coleman are the most top of the line. When buying a generator, you can go with the cheapest model, but you are going to get what you pay for. When picking a generator, no matter what model and size here are some basic things to look for. Make sure that is has a surge protector, and an automatic shut down for excessive loads, as well as when the oil levels get too low. Make sure that it has at least one 110v outlet, and more on larger sizes. It should also have a 12v charger built in. there are many applications for this, including charging dead batteries. Make sure that there is a ground wire adaptation, to prevent electrical shock You will need to regularly maintain your generator, check oil levels, make sure that it is clean and free of debris. Use common sense and be sure to follow all operating instructions to the letter. You can find not only more tips, but an abundance of generator retailers online. |
