A guide to buying adhesives

When it comes to buying glues or adhesives there is a wide variety from glues used for normal home projects to specialised compounds used in surgery or sealing windows. In this article we will stick to home projects but if you require glue for more industrial tools and other industrial needs contact us.

Glue is made of animal byproducts such as skin and bones whereas an ‘adhesive’ refers to any product that joins materials together. However the names ‘glue’ and ‘adhesive’ has developed to an interchangeable term.

When buying adhesives you get two basic glues: Natural glues which are made from animal byproducts and plant sources as well as Synthetic adhesives which include polyvinyl acetate (PVA), silicone, spray, epoxy amongst many others. This article will tell you all about the different adhesives and the uses thereof.
  • Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) or white glue
Function: This glue is used for wood, engineered wood, paper, crafts and any other simple project.
It is typically packaged in a plastic, squeeze bottle, is easy to clean, it doesn’t stain, is non-toxic and non-flammable.
Setting time: PVA takes one hour to set and dries clear.
  • Alipathic Resin (Yellow Carpenter’s Glue)
Function: This is a refined version of PVA and is used for woodworking for both indoor and outdoor appliances.
Carpenter’s glue is also packaged in plastic squeeze bottles, is water resistant, non-toxic and non-flammable, and comes in whites, yellows and brown.
Setting time: It sets within 15 minutes.
  • Epoxy
Function: Epoxy is extremely strong and is generally used for the repair or bonding of tile, metal, glass, hard plastics and non-porous materials.
Be careful when using Epoxy glue as it is both toxic and flammable, and resists just about anything including water and solvents.
Setting time: Epoxy only takes 5 minutes to set.
  • Cellulose
Function: Cellulose is utilised for wood, china, glass and most fabrics.
When using Cellulose be sure to apply more than one coat.
  • Urea Formaldehyde (Plastic Resin)
Function: This is a powder that needs to be mixed with water to form an adhesive where after it is used for furniture making.
Setting time: Within four hours.
  • Anaerobic
Function: This is used to secure threaded fasteners like bolts and screws and comes in permanent and reversible versions.
  • Hot melt
Function: This type of glue requires an electric glue gun and is used for crafts,   general projects and repair.
Setting time: It sets within a minute as it cools and solidifies.
